Author: Christopher Paolini
Published: 2018
Genre: YA Fantasy

Synopsis From Goodreads:

It’s been a year since Eragon departed Alagaësia in search of the perfect home to train a new generation of Dragon Riders.

Now he is struggling with an endless sea of tasks: constructing a vast dragon hold, wrangling with suppliers, guarding dragon eggs and dealing with belligerent Urgals and haughty elves. Then a vision from the Eldunarí, unexpected visitors and an exciting Urgal legend offer a much-needed distraction and a new perspective.

This volume features three original stories set in Alagaësia, interspersed with scenes from Eragon’s own unfolding adventure. Included is an excerpt from the memoir of the unforgettable witch and fortune-teller Angela the herbalist, penned by Angela Paolini, the inspiration for the character, herself!

Relish the incomparable imagination of Christopher Paolini in this thrilling new collection of stores based in the world of the Inheritance Cycle.

My Take:

The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm is set after the conclusion of the Inheritance Cycle, and as such, seems like a separate epilogue to the series. You get a glimpse of what life is like now for Eragon and Saphira, and through them see three other stories from across Alagaësia. Familiar characters are brought back and through one of the stories, this could also be a tiny prologue for the next book, Murtagh, which at the time of this book’s publication, was not written or even mentioned as a possibility as far as I can tell. It is a very short book, in Paolini standards, being only 288 pages, and is a very quick read. But it is a fun story and a nice glimpse back into the world of the Inheritance Cycle.

(4/5)
This is a fun, short adventure back in the world of Alagaësia with characters you love and have come to know in the Inheritance Cycle. It’s a little glimpse into their world “after the end.” Who doesn’t like another epilogue?

Language:

There is basically no foul language. Only one instance of a non-translated dwarf swear word.

Sexual Content:

None.

Drug/Alcohol Use:

There is one instance of a character drinking blackberry mead, and one mention of smoking a pipe.

Violence:

There is a fight in an inn, and an attack from a dragon with people eaten but nothing drawn out or gory.

Plot/Storytelling:

This is a fascinating story that is set in three distinct parts, but all of them are woven together as a seamless whole. It has various POV, but it is done in such as way that it is not confusing, and it moves the story along quite rapidly. Because of its length in comparison to its predecessors in the series, it seems extremely short and almost lighthearted, as it skims the tops of issues and does not take the time to delve into them as the previous books would have. It is a fun, quick, continuing adventure in the world of Eragon and Saphira.
