My Take:
You were introduced to Ledger and Zoe in Spies Don’t Fall for Their Asset, and this book stays true to the fast-paced fun in the first book, but thankfully, it is not a copy with just the main characters and slight details changed. This book is a bit more serious and works on giving the characters depth, which, in at least Ledger’s case, was really needed as he seemed a bit one-dimensional and shallow in the first book. The focus and pacing surprised me as well, as even though they are racing against the clock across multiple countries and with a serious mission, time is given to observe the details and see nuances in the relationship. So, even though it is about spies saving the world, it is more of a relationship book than a spycraft book. And even though I wasn’t reading this book for a realistic spy feel, there were moments that I thought, “Riiight. Ok, sure.” That being said, it is a fun, witty book with banter, tension, and push-pull between the main characters. It is clean and tackles some serious topics, such as difficult histories and trust issues, and how that can impact your view of life. If you want a lighthearted, fun book with moments that can make you laugh but with a little bit of depth and might make you think about how you interact with others, this is for you!
