Synopsis From Goodreads:

When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications.

The International Nuclear Event Scale tracks nuclear disasters.  It has seven levels. Level 7 is a Major Accident, with only two on record: Fukushima and Chernobyl. There has never been a Level 8. Until now.

In this heart-stopping thriller, ordinary people – power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, families, neighbors, and friends – are thrust into an extraordinary situation as they face the ultimate test of their lives. It will take the combined courage, ingenuity, and determination of a brave few to save not only their community and loved ones, but the fate of humanity at large.

My Take:

How much is a single life worth? In triage, multiple decisions must be made that weigh the severity of the injury against the cost of time, personnel, and materials needed to determine if it is an acceptable use of those resources. Sometimes it is determined that the greater good is better served elsewhere. But was that determination the right one?

Worst Case Scenario is a thrill ride of epic proportions, where Murphy’s Law grabs hold and doesn’t let go. With the timeline counting down, events race toward the end, keeping you on the edge of your seat. I don’t usually read real-life thrillers like this, as it can be just too life-like. After the plane crashed, I contemplated quitting, but I couldn’t. I had to find out what happened next. The book had hooked me and wouldn’t let go, even though the vast cast of characters took a while to sort out, and some of the scenes were almost too descriptive and real to hope they wouldn’t show up in my dreams later. But there was the flip side of that reality: the characters came to life. They were flawed humans trying to deal with an almost unimaginable set of circumstances, and it felt like I was right there alongside them, experiencing their rollercoaster of emotions.

John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” In a situation where every decision could mean the lives of millions, how much is a single life worth? Is it only valuable in service to the majority? I think it is nicely put later on in the book when one character says, “..what is the whole without the individual? If we do not care for the life of one person, how do the lives of millions have meaning?” Something to think about.

(note: it would have been 5 stars if there had been less foul language)

Language:

I counted 58 swear words in this book, including the f word and taking the Lord’s name in vain, along with a variety of other epithets.

Sexual Content:

None

Drug/Alcohol Use:

One character is described as being an alcoholic and is holding a beer in one scene.

Violence:

There is a plane crash with catastrophic damage to the plane and the surrounding area, sometimes with detailed descriptions. There is also radiation poisoning and drowning, people held at gunpoint, and dead bodies described.

Plot/Storytelling:

This is a fast-paced, plot-driven book with an omniscient narrative style.
